💫 prelude: A Girl Idle
I am the result of my surroundings.
My home in Florida and in Portland feel like two sides of a coin. My part of Florida can be quiet and reflective, the only real thing there is to do is go outside or go to the store, while Portland feels like it has everything in the world, being the first real city I’ve ever been too. So now being back where there’s no seasons and missing the idea of Fall, it has reminded me of who I was in Portland and how quickly my time there came and went. It felt like life pushed me out. It didn’t matter if I once made $7000 from a fashion show or that people would stop me on the street because they just wanted to tell me how much they liked the things I made, I’m in a place where I blend into the walls. I think it’s something I needed, but I miss the life I had sometimes.
Nothing Much Really Happens Anymore.
🎥 interlude i: films
Since I no longer know how to create anything, I’ll continue talking about the creations of others. The current obsession: Adam Sandler. The man has absolutely ironic drip. Little to my knowledge about a year ago, everyone online was talking about Adam Sandler as a style icon, creating lookbook threads on Reddit and tiktok’s featuring his “Iconic and Functional Outfits” which he responded, “That’s just a guy who opened a suitcase and threw something on.”
Why am I talking about Adam Sandler? Because unintentionally I have been consistently watching Adam Sandler movies every month, including the absolutely God tier projects he randomly decided to be apart of and the insane garbage he pushes out just for fun. And so…
Here’s my monthly movie wrap up:
Hits
Adam Sandler: Love You
(2024) Directed by Josh Safdie
★★★★½
this reminded me why i liked adam sandler as a kid, i think this showcases i really special quality about adam sandler, the fact that is a person too. the opening of this special was anixtey inducing, it showcases the chaos of this side of making things, putting us right there in his shoes before he has to perform. i laughed the whole time and was emotional by the end. safdie & sandler work together to capture a slice of humanity in a comedy special. to me, i makes me feel as i have grown up, adam sandler has grown with me.
Problemista (2023) Directed by Julio Torres
★★★★★ ♥︎
this movies vibe is like if nathan fielder had a baby with jim henson. innocent, creative, colorful, fun, and funny. i just finished it and i already want to watch it again. i really relate to being a afraid. sometimes your favorite monster has to show you how to ask for what you want and need.
This movie pushed Tilda Swinton to the top of my most watch actor of the year list, having watched a whopping 6 films with her in it. I watched Uncut Gems recently (look forward to my review for September) trying to dethrone Swinton and give Adam Sandler the title of my most watched actor for 2024. She was like a sleeper agent. Tilda Swinton was IN UNCUT GEMS? Yes, merely the voice on a phone, not seen but very much there. Let the queen have her title I guess….
Alien: Romulus (2024) Directed by Fede Álvarez
★★★★½
if i leave the theater wanting to see a movie again right away, it’s a good ass movie. the effects, set, and sound in this movie was incredible! andy’s performance as an android was incredible! i don’t know, it was super fun and the horror aspect really had me on the edge of my seat. best of sci-fi and horror!
Oops, a controversial one. This movie is heavily disliked by fans of the Alien franchise, but highly praised by new fans. Why you might ask? Purely because this movie is a rehash of the best parts of all the old ones, but didn’t necessarily do anything new or inventive. In my personal opinion, after spending days watching all the Alien movies back to back, I can tell you they are all pretty repetitive. Don’t get me wrong, I agreed with the majority on which ones were great and which were odd fever dreams but I feel like the newest one is a great addition to the series.
Blink Twice (2024) Directed by Zoë Kravitz
★★★★ ♥︎
you’re my bestfriend, boop!
holy fuck this was not the movie i expected to watch and i LOVED IT! i would put this in the same box as the menu and a few other but this is my favorite of the bunch. a lot of interesting commentary that didn’t feel heavy handed to me. idk, i’m so different!, i liked the ending too.
This movie is Zoe Kravitz directorial debut and I was thoroughly impressed. In the beginning of the movie, she’s able to capture all the charms of Channing Tatum. He’s awkward in a very endearing way. I had no idea that Tatum and Kravitz were engaged! (This information helped me understand why the movie felt like it had references to She’s the Man(2006), a romantic comedy Tatum was in.)
📚 interlude ii: reading
I created a book club. I picked The Picture Dorian Grey to be our first read together (it’s a free ebook that you get when joining the club). Only one person has joined it and really hasn’t said too much on my comments, so what I’m trying to tell you is join it.
Outside of book club, I’ve become a creative writing student recently and I had to read On Writing by Stephan King, I highly recommend if you have any interest in being a writer!
💌 interlude iii: life in general
Truthfully, I don’t make much of anything any more. I feel too scared too now, because something that happen to me and maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to share that something but trust me, you would want to show yourself online ever again either. What happened made me rather erratic, feeling the need to constantly pivot so the people I didn’t want to find me online wouldn’t, but somehow I was always found. My safe space to make things or literally just be myself online, were no longer mine. It felt like a piece of myself was taken away from me.
I guess this is me being brave, because all I want is to make things again.
🌷 in conclusion:
My Hopes for September:
to finally stop pivoting
to make my friends send me as MANY pictures of fall as they possibly can
to find more places to be outside of my house
to write and write and write
